Astronomy as a science began with the Ionian philosophers, with whom Greek philosophy and mathematics also began. While the Egyptians and Babylonians had accomplished much of astronomical worth, it remained for the unrivalled speculative genius of the Greeks, in particular, their mathematical genius, to lay the foundations of the true science of astronomy. In this classic study, a noted scholar discusses in lucid detail the specific advances made by the Greeks, many of whose ideas anticipated the discoveries of modern astronomy.
Pythagoras, born at Samos about 572 B.C., was probably the first to hold that the earth is spherical in shape, while his later followers anticipated Copernicus with the then-startling hypothesis that the earth was not the center of the universe but a planet like the others. Heraclides of Pontus (c. 388-315 B.C.), a pupil of Plato, declared that the apparent daily rotation of the heavenly bodies is due, not to a rotation of the heavenly sphere about an axis through the center of the earth, but to the rotation of the earth itself around its own axis. Secondly, Heraclides discovered that Venus and Mercury revolve around the sun like satellites. Perhaps the greatest astronomer of antiquity was Hipparchus, who flourished between 161 and 126 B.C. He compiled a catalog of fixed stars to the number 850 or more, made great improvements in the instruments used for astronomical observations, and discovered the precession of the equinoxes, among other accomplishments. The astronomy of Hipparchus takes its definitive form in the Syntaxis (commonly called the Almagest) of Ptolemy, written about A.D. 150, which held the field until the time of Copernicus.
The extraordinary achievements of these and many more Greek theorists are given full coverage in this erudite account, which blends exceptional clarity with a readable style to produce a work that is not only indispensable for astronomers and historians of science but easily accessible to science-minded lay readers.

Easily Ripped apart within minutes
Color: Blue Puppy, Size: Medium Size 2, Color: Blue Puppy, Size: Medium Size 2
I have a new foster who’s only 35 pounds not an aggressive chewer and loves to play with my dogs rooster soccer ball toy but the ball itself is a little big for her to get her teeny little mouth around when she’s trying to carry and run with it this happened to pop up on my feed a size smaller (medium, instead of large ) and available for next day delivery, so I bought it specifically for the little dog to play with. I gave it to her to play outside while my hound is busy playing with one of her toys I went about watering the garden, when I turned around a few minutes later, I saw the ball appeared to be completely flattened. As I walked over, I saw pieces of black rubber on the ground, and then the rest of the ball had a gaping hole in it. The rooster version of the ball that I bought from another seller has been going strong for months with multiple dogs playing with it and chewing on it and ripping the side ribbons apart so either I got a defective toy or the quality of manufacturer from this seller is much lower since the durability of the ball seems to be less than an hour.

This ball is cute and my dog loves tags. However he popped this ball with one bite to carry it…. Within 10 minutes of getting it. It should have a tougher exterior

Perfect for Blind Dogs, Fun and Durable
Size: 2-pack, Style: Duo
My blind dog loves these Chuckit! sniff balls. She can easily sniff them out and plays fetch with them for 20 minutes a day, even running up and down the stairs. The balls are durable, bounce well, and the bacon and peanut butter scent keeps her engaged. I do wish Chuckit! would bring back the version with a tone so we could play fetch outside more easily. Overall, a fantastic toy for dogs that rely on scent and a fun way to keep them active.

My 8 month old Golden Retriever loves these. It is also one of the few products she cannot destroy. They smell as described and she loves to chew them and play fetch when. She can chew these easily without destroying them. Overall good value for the money for my Golden
